Whether you are the lone social worker on staff or are feeling disconnected from your colleagues, feeling like the only one can be overwhelming at times. Maybe you are experiencing imposter syndrome, maybe you are feeling misunderstood, maybe you wonder if others fully understand what you do or all of the skills, knowledge, and perspective that you bring to the table. Let's be honest, sometimes it feels as if we are functioning in spaces where our non-social work colleagues are speaking a different occupational language. If you have felt like the only one, know that you are not alone.

Finding community as a social worker within your respective UCC can be challenging, however can we demonstrate the versatility that has so long been embedded into our profession to connect with one another. Thinking outside of the box by building your "collective" externally might be a good first step. Actively participate in your professional organizations and attend conferences! These strategies can perhaps keep you motivated and help to forge relationships with your social work peers across this nation. Being the "only" rarely feels good, but when you are able to join a community, you can more easily make the shift from simply surviving to thriving!

We invite you to share your thoughts, reactions, or experiences with being the “only one” here with us. Also, please stay tuned for a possible virtual gathering for community connection on this topic in April!
